Random Saturday update of sorts.
Aug. 20th, 2005 08:15 amRandom updatery. My computer chair died. (Or rather, non-ergonomic chir that I used to sit in front of my computer with). Very gracefully, and not pitching me off on the side and possibly sticking me with jagged metal. The (interim) replacement dining room chair died too. I'm writing this perched on top of a ATX computer case. Oldass sheet metal, but it isn't going to die or crumple.
I'm off to go look for a chair today. As i have work to do this weekend that may involve actual money, it's kinda important. My bank account and savings cry.
Um, not gonna doing the "LJ people you met in real life" meme. I respect the few folk I met IRL to trivialize them. Da random meme ain't bad, tho.
Thesharp and throbbing stress neck pain that kept me down yesterday is mostly gone.
Thank the Bujold. Finally finished "Paladin of Souls".
I started it before, but could not finish it before. I will admit, it did take a while to pick up (for me).
But the end of the book - holy crap. Great, great fantasy story. GREAT main character (she may even be as formidable as Cordelia Vorkosigan) who, unlike most of the fantasy conventions, isn't young, with life to look forward to.
Ista is old, has had kids, a bucket of tragedy and thought that the rest of her life was simply waiting for one of the five gods of Chalion to reclaim her. She does get claimed, but not the way she thinks.
GREAT story. I had a ebook version of this, saw the paperback and bought it (before HBP, actually) and now read it through.
Harry Potter and Jo Rowling may be popular as anythng, but I'm eagerly awaiting Pratchett's "Thud" (the Watch, dwarf/troll war in Ankh-Morpork and Vimes changing diapers. I'm there!) and I'll look at Bujold's "The Hallowed Hunt" (Chalionverse, but not the same folk as the preceeding two books) when I shop at Amazon again.
And yeah, I read "The Curse of Chalion" before. Also a great book. This one was a lot easier to read through, for some reason. Maybe I identified with Caz more?

Date: 2005-08-21 12:59 am (UTC)You make the book sound very good. It's been a long time since I've read any science fiction and the gods know I don't need more books to add to my "to read" pile, but I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.
The Pratchett you mention - is that part of the Discworld series? Greg was reading those.

Date: 2005-08-22 11:42 pm (UTC)The book was good. Started pretty slowly (for me) though. Not SF, but fantasy. Alternate worlld, but with five gods (none omnipotent) who do intervene in the affairs of men.
The Pratchett I mention is the newest one, which isn't out yet. It's the first Watch novel since "Night Watch".
Pratchett my be the best comic writer working today. And for all that, the books are still relevant.

Date: 2005-08-22 11:43 pm (UTC)But yes, both "Chalion" and "Paladin" were good. Up there with the best of the Vorkosigan series.

Date: 2005-08-21 10:23 am (UTC)I think I liked "Paladin" more because she went more into the religoin. Also, I just didn't sympathize with Chalion as much as Ista, but that may be a gender thing. ;-)
